Position Overview

The Massey University Veterinary Teaching hospital is inviting applications for a 12-month surgical (non-rotating) internship in the Companion Animal Hospital, School of Veterinary Science.
 
Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

This internship provides a pathway towards preparation for a surgical residency application and further specialty training. In your internship you will work with two surgical Fellows of the NZ and Australian College and European/American boarded anaesthetists and criticalists, and our exceptional nursing and support team.

Our program is designed for a highly motivated veterinarian who wishes to grow their clinical knowledge and expertise in small animal surgery and to prepare the successful candidate for residency and/or ANZCVS membership exams.

Āu Mahi | What you will do

Under the direct guidance and supervision of senior faculty members as a surgical intern, you will be responsible for case management, perioperative surgical care, and you will assist with after-hours care of cases in the hospital. In particular you will supervise and assist students with patient care, consultations and peri-operative case management. You will also be assisting in surgery alongside students and must be available for limited after-hours surgical cases.

In conjunction with the clinical duties, there are CPD opportunities through regular journal clubs, tutorials, multidisciplinary case rounds, and monthly mortality and morbidity rounds. A Surgical intern is expected to present cases on the Tuesday and Thursday clinical rounds.

Publication of a research project will be encouraged which can aid residency applications as evidence of scholarship.

The salary for this role is at a Veterinary Intern grade (for 2024) at $45,143 (NZD).

The Companion Animal Hospital is both first opinion and referral and comprises of the following services: General Practice, Emergency and Critical Care (ECC), Referral Surgery, Internal Medicine and Oncology, Anaesthesia and Imaging. Ko koe tēnei | About you

  • You must hold a veterinary professional degree, e.g., BVSc, DVM, VMD etc. from an AVMA- accredited school or one recognised by the New Zealand Veterinary Council to enable full registration in New Zealand as a veterinarian. See the NZVC website for clarification. 
  • Overseas candidates must be eligible to live and work in NZ.
  • A full and current driver's license is required.
